Updates on our journey to open our local co-op
The Shared Harvest board affirms our commitment to secure a site in downtown Elgin for our community-owned grocery store focused on local, organic, and healthful foods. We are continuing to research and evaluate multiple sites.
After learning that distribution activity at the post office at 66 Grove Court was relocated, we pursued shared use at that location. We collaborated with Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi and his staff to contact and negotiate with the United States Postal Service on the opportunity. Unfortunately we learned that USPS cannot accommodate a shared space situation there, so we’re no longer pursuing it as a potential site. We’re actively evaluating other sites and will keep our shareholders informed.
Securing a site is one of our top three priorities, with the other two being expanding shareholder and community relationships, and growing our number of shareholders. Shared Harvest will participate in the upcoming 2024 Elgin Earth Summit, Saturday, April 20, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at The Centre of Elgin’s Heritage Ballroom. We’re also making fun plans for our presence at this year’s Downtown Elgin Farmers Market, scheduled to open on Friday, June 7, 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. We look forward to engaging with the community throughout the upcoming season!
